Facts about the Vogue “Lookbook” picture database

[ February 3rd, 2009 | Technology ]
  • contains approx. 125.000 pictures available in different resolutions (from thumbnail to large size)
  • each image is tagged with category, season, label, model, designer, look etc.
  • we had direct access to this huge amount of pictures by sending queries in a special data exchange format called JSON (JavaScript Object Notation; similar to XML) via a PHP script on our server
  • result contains also the path to each matching picture on http://media.vogue.com
  • we created a prototype first simulating the existing lookbook application in Flash/AS3 and an exporter for a local MySQL database used by VVVV
  • so the students had access to the database in different ways
  • aim was to demonstrate the functionality of their idea as a more or less working application (from “clickdummy” to a functional prototype) - depending on their skills
